Overview

Delhi, officially the National Capital Territory of Delhi or NCT, is a city and a union territory of India. It is bordered by Haryana on three sides and by Uttar Pradesh to the east. The NCT covers an area of 1,484 square kilometers (573 sq. mi). Delhi is the second wealthiest city after Mumbai in India, with a total wealth of $450 billion and home to 18 billionaires and 23,000 millionaires. Delhi is also the centre of the National Capital Region (NCR), which is a unique ‘interstate regional planning’ area created by the Capital Region (NCR), which is a unique ‘interstate regional planning’ area created by the National Capital Region Planning Board Act of 1985.

As per details from Census 2011, Delhi has population of 1.68 Crores, an increase from figure of 1.39 Crore in 2001 census. Total population of Delhi as per 2011 census is 16,787,941 of which male and female are 8,987,326 and 7,800,615 respectively. Hinduism is majority religion in state of Delhi with 81.68 % followers. Islam is second most popular religion in state of Delhi with approximately 12.86 % following it. In Delhi state, Christinity is followed by 0.87 %, Jainism by 0.99 %, Sikhism by 3.40 % and Buddhism by 3.40 %.

Indira Gandhi International Airport, situated to the southwest of Delhi, is the main gateway for the city’s domestic and international civilian air traffic. Delhi has the highest road density of 2103 km/100 km2 in India. National Highways 1, 2, 8, 10 & 24 pass through Delhi. Delhi is a major junction in the Indian railway network and is the headquarters of the Northern Railway. It is well connected with all major states by railway.

India will build a second international airport near its capital city in the next four to five years, costing an estimated 200 billion rupees ($3.10 billion), the government announced on Saturday, to meet explosive growth in passenger traffic.

Healthcare in Delhi

The total bed capacity of medical institutions in Delhi was 49,969 as on 31st March 2015 for total 1188 (Govt./Pvt.) Medical Institutions (hospitals) working in Delhi. The number of beds in the Medical Institutions operated by Government of India, Delhi Government & Local bodies constituted as 21.67 percent, 21.65 percent, 7.59 percent respectively and beds in private nursing homes/ hospitals/ voluntary organizations was recorded at 48.39 per cent. In addition to the renowned government hospitals, Delhi has also showed the highest private sector participation in health sector.

Delhi’s hospital bed to population ratio is little more than half of the WHO’s recommended standard of 5 beds per 1,000 population, even though allocation to health sector under annual plans has significantly increased in the last decade.

The number of beds in Delhi hospitals increased to 49,969 in 2015-16, nearly 20 per cent more than what it was six years ago, according to the latest Economic Survey of the national capital released today.

The total number of hospital beds increased from 41,706 in 2010 to 49,969 in 2015-16 thereby also increasing the bed population ratio (beds per 1,000 persons) from 2.54 to 2.76 in the same period.

Per capita expenditure on health in Delhi has increased to Rs 2,999 in 2015-16 from Rs 1,243 in the year 2009-10.

Major Government Hospitals players in Delhi are as Follows :

1. All India Institute of Medical Sciences – 1766 beds

Located in Ansari Nagar in Delhi, AIIMS is also a medical research center established in the year 1956 and functions under the ministry of health and family welfare.

2. Safdarjang Hospital – 1531 beds

Safdarjung Hospital is a multispecialty teaching hospital located on the Ring Road, Delhi right opposite to AIIMS. Before AIIMS, it was the only tertiary care hospital in the entire territory.

3. Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narain Hospital – 1847 beds

The hospital is located in Jawaharlal Nehru Marg in New Delhi connecting all major railway junctions and areas in the city. The hospital attracts patients from nearby states such as Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh and covers all major medical and surgical specialties.

4. G.B. Pant Hospital – 714 beds

It is an internationally recognised tertiary care hospital to treat heart, brain, gastrointestinal and psychiatric disorders. It treats more than three lakhs patients in its outpatient departments every year.

5. Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital – 1000 beds

The hospital renders round the clock emergency services in all clinical disciplines and is renowned for its neurosurgery facilities, Computed Tomography (CT scan) Burn care unit, Thalassemia center, dialysis unit which takes care of both peritoneal dialysis and haemodialysis.

6. Red Cross Society Hospital – 750 beds

The Red Cross Society Hospital is located in Dilshad garden, New Seemapuri and is being co-ordinated by the Red Cross volunteer organization. It is a 750 bedded hospital with all leading specialties and super specialties and is renowned for its neurological center.

7. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital – 670 beds

The hospital is located in the heart of west Delhi, about 100 meters from Hari Nagar and is one of the best hospitals in Delhi for Plastic surgery, neurosurgery and psychiatry.

8. Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital – 1216 beds

Vardhman Mahavir Medical College is a medical college in New Delhi. It is attached with the famous Safdarjang Hospital for clinical teaching. The college runs under the umbrella of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University.
